Embracing Nature in an Underground Restaurant

Zhenhua Luo's Dragon Restaurant is a testament to the power of design and innovation. Located in a Financial Tech office building, the restaurant is primarily underground, with 80% of the dining space having no access to natural light. Despite this, Luo has managed to create a relaxing atmosphere, balancing the technological environment with elements of nature.

The design draws its inspiration from nature itself, simulating waterfalls, pools, valleys, and various plants. This is achieved through the use of digital technology and concrete casting. The result is a space that, although devoid of natural light, feels open and refreshing. Copper ducklings "swim" on the cast installations, adding a playful touch to the restaurant's ambiance.

One of the unique properties of the Dragon Restaurant is its successful simulation of natural light. Despite being underground, the space is inviting and comfortable, thanks to the clever use of lighting and natural elements. This balance between technology and nature is a key strength of the design, making it stand out from other underground spaces.

The Dragon Restaurant was realized over the course of a year, from 2019 to 2020, in Beijing. The project involved a team of designers, including Gongpu Zhao, Yanli Zhang, Qianxuan Niu, Lin Yang, and Yongcheng Xia, all working under the guidance of Zhenhua Luo. The project covered a total area of 2500 sqm, with each square meter meticulously designed to create a cohesive and engaging dining experience.

This design has not gone unnoticed in the industry. In 2021, the Dragon Restaurant was awarded the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award. This prestigious accolade is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, and the Dragon Restaurant certainly fits the bill. With its unique blend of technology and nature, it is a shining example of how design can transform a space, regardless of its limitations.
